A strange mushroom called Tocyukaso attracts attention. It grows from caterpillars of Endoclita excrescens in high mountains such as Tibet and the Himalayas that are 4000 meter above sea level. During winter, parasitic funguses in the air parasitize living insects and create hyphae, using the nutrient of the insects’ body. The insects die soon from being squeezed nutrition and rod-shaped mushrooms emerge from the dead bodies in summer. It was named ‘冬虫夏草’ because it looks like an insect (虫) in winter (冬) and a shape of reed (草) in summer (夏).
‘冬虫夏草’ was carried in ‘本草従新’, a Chinese medical book published in 1757, and has been treasured as a noble medicine for nourishing tonic, longevity and used for asthma, tuberculosis and lumbago. In recent years, research on its medicinal properties and pharmacological action has been advanced, and many kinds of drug efficacy such as action on immunity improvement and anti-tumor were confirmed.
Tochukaso was originally named for Cordyceps sinensis that parasitizes caterpillars of swift moths from China. In Japan the name is used for wider meaning, including specific insects and spiders.
Therefore, the number is confirmed approximately 400 kinds across the globe, 300 kinds in Japan. Not all of these have medicinal action and almost all of these remain unexplained.
Presently, only a few types of specialties of China, such as C.sinensis, C.sinensis and C.sobolifera, are found medicinally effective and recognised as Chinese medicine.
Tochukaso “Senju” uses only C.militaris that contains rich effective ingredients among them.
We established a stable way to product fruiting body of Cordyceps militaris. Living silkworm pupae that have been raised under sterile conditions are got to parasitize very infectious fungi of Cordyceps militaris. This is how we produce fruiting body of Cordyceps militaris in large quantities in the same growth process as wild Cordyceps militaris.
(Mushroom grows by absorbing nutrients in the culture medium. Cordyceps sinensis become fully ripe when mushroom is grown in the living pupa medium containing plenty of active ingredients.)
